Huskies easily win sectional opener

The Hamilton Heights softball team headed to Connersville in Class 3A Sectional 24 to face New Castle in the second game of the first round.

The Huskies scored early and often on their way to an 11-1 win over the Trojans.

Heather Crays got it started with a double and scored on Hannah Dent’s liner to right to go up 1-0 early. Dent scored two batters later on Kamryn Rhoton’s homer to center for 3-0.

Melanee Forrester laced a double to center in the third, scoring Rhoton and Ellie Engle to push it to 5-0. Lily Cash plated Forrester for 6-0 through three.

McKenzie Jackson drove in Crays in the fourth on a sacrifice fly. Rhoton grounded out to score Dent for an 8-0 count.

Heights’ second sac fly was by Cash for a 9-0 advantage.

New Castle got its lone run on a solo home run in the sixth.

Heights ended it in six with two more runs.

Crays and Cash each threw six frames, combining for 14 K’s and a walk. Forrester, Dent, Rhoton and Cash all had multi-hit nights.

The Huskies (12-7) play Connersville (13-7) in the second semifinal tonight at 7:30 p.m.
