NOBLESVILLE – The Hamilton County boys track & field meet came down to the last event – in fact, the last leg of the event.

Carmel was battling Hamilton Southeastern and Westfield for the team championship and a fourth-place finish in the 4×400 relay helped the Greyhounds stay on top of the point standings at the meet, which took place Thursday at Guerin Catholic.

The discus and shot put events hadn’t been entered into the standings yet, but once they were, Carmel could celebrate. The Greyhounds scored 128 points to win the team trophy, just ahead of the Royals and the Shamrocks, who tied for second place with 124 points.

Hounds coach Brian Hamlett credited his team’s depth for helping Carmel to come through.

“We had guys we didn’t know we’d be counting on early on in the season,” said Hamlett. “Guys that are down on the roster are going to have to come up and score points when they’re not expected to. Guys that are seeded a little bit lower are going to have to come up and score points when they aren’t expected to. “And that’s what happened here.”

The Greyhounds picked up two early event wins. Cooper Szotek, Lucas Bartlett, Carter Buhr and Trevor Walton teamed up for a victory in the 4×800 relay, clocking in at 7 minutes, 49.60 seconds. Jonah Kaul led a 1-2 finish in the 1600 run, finishing in 4:17.76. Bartlett was second. In addition to the 4×400 relay, Gavin Adkins helped keep Carmel in front by taking second in the discus.

The Shamrocks had the most event wins, collecting six blue ribbons. Olumide Fapetu was first in the 100 dash and joined Caleb Terril, Logan Tuck and Cayden Gearhart to claim the 4×100 relay in a new meet record time of 41.70 seconds.

Westfield won the 4×400 relay as well; Terril joined Ryd Wallerstedt, Caleb Haney and Donovan Ledford for that victory. Other winners were Maison McCray in the 200 dash, Luke Moulder in the 3200 run and Brady Lemieux in the pole vault.

The Royals were helped by Sam Long, who swept both hurdle events. Long took the 110 hurdles race in 14.15 seconds, edging out Guerin Catholic’s Seffrin Smith, who finished in 14.19 seconds. Both are top 10 times in Indiana for the season. Long also claimed the 300 hurdles race.

Fishers placed fourth with 94 points and picked up two event wins. Rocky Duplessis was first in the 400 dash, while Konrad Haynes dominated the high jump, winning with a leap of 6 feet, 8 inches.

Noblesville picked up two wins. Austin Donahoe was the long jump champion, while Banner Barnes was first in the 800 run. Barnes’ time of 1:50.41 is fourth in Indiana and ranks him 22nd in the country.

Hamilton Heights’ Will Duncan swept the throwing events. His shot put throw of 58 feet, 10 inches rates him fourth in the state, while his discus throw of 162 feet, 7 inches ranks him ninth in Indiana.

Team scores: Carmel 128, Hamilton Southeastern 124, Westfield 124, Fishers 94, Noblesville 69, Hamilton Heights 53, Guerin Catholic 29.
