Hamilton Heights Superintendent Dr. Derek Arrowood has been presented with the Ida Yaney Overholser Award for his work with the Central Indiana chapter of Teach One to Lead One (T1L1).
The Ida Award is an annual award given to a person who has worked behind the scenes to help children overcome obstacles and become leaders through T1L1 mentoring. Hamilton Heights School Corporation is the first school system in Indiana to host a T1L1 mentoring group. He is also one of the original volunteer mentors from 2019 and continues to mentor students each week.
Since its inception, the Central Indiana T1L1 program has grown from one school serving 26 students into seven school districts serving 1,698 students across central Indiana. The Ida Award recognizes the significance of community partners who have impacted the lives of students.
Ida Yaney Overholser was born in Indiana in 1885. Although she experienced heartbreaking loss and tragedy during her lifetime, she overcame these obstacles and taught others to do the same. In her 100 years, she served as a caregiver to people in need and a comforter to those who had experienced great loss in life, as she had. The Ida Award honors her legacy to bestow grace and kindness to people in need.
