Huskies start season with Peru Invitational win

The Hamilton Heights girls volleyball team started their season Saturday, Aug. 16 by defending their title at the Peru Invitational.

The Huskies won all four best-of-three set matches in two straight sets. Heights defeated Rensselaer Central 25-18, 25-13; Frankfort 25-17, 25-22; North Miami 25-9, 25-10 and host Peru 25-11, 25-17. In the championship match against the Tigers, Addie Doak provided strong serving and defense, while Riley Suarez had several blocks.

The Huskies are off to a 4-0 start and host Lebanon tonight.

Westfield began its season in historic fashion Monday.

The Shamrocks swept Yorktown 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 to collect their first ever victory over the multiple state champion Tigers. Senior Georgia Bresnahan led the Westfield attack with 10 kills, followed by sophomore Jordyn Blair with nine kills.

Junior Carsyn Comer made six blocks. Junior Kendyl Strack collected 18 digs, followed by 12 for Bresnahan and 10 for Emily Blevins. Junior Kenna Robinson dished out 24 assists.

The Rocks play Thursday at Pendleton Heights.

Sheridan went 1-1 for its first two matches.

The Blackhawks dropped their opener Monday to Crawfordsville 25-16, 25-16, 25-18. Lainey Mendenhall hit eight kills, followed by Adria Jump with seven and Beth Adams with four. Mendenhall served three aces and Jump dished out 11 assists, followed by Meredith Krupp with seven.

Jump led the defense with 15 digs. Krupp had 14 digs, followed by Mendenhall and Adams with seven each. Mendenhall made one solo block.

Sheridan traveled to Clinton Central Tuesday for its first Hoosier Heartland Conference match, winning 25-13, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14. Mendenhall put down 16 kills, with Jump hitting seven, Amiyah Doss hitting four and Adams and Kelsie Hagan both hitting three.

Adams totaled 18 points off 26 serving attempts, while Krupp and Hagan both had 11 service points. Krupp served six aces, followed by Adams and Jump with four each.

Jump dished out 19 assists and also collected 25 digs. Krupp made 19 digs, Mendenhall had seven and Adams had five. Doss made one solo block and one block assist, with Hagan making one block assist.

Sheridan hosts Park Tudor on Thursday.
