The Carmel Fire and Police Departments held welcomed the community to Public Safety Day on Saturday, Aug. 16. What began in 1980 as a small gathering at the McDonald’s on Carmel Drive has since grown into a community-wide celebration, now held in the largest parking lot in Carmel to accommodate the thousands of attendees.
Graciously sponsored by Lucas Oil and Ascension St. Vincent Carmel, families enjoyed a wide array of activities, including the always-popular Touch-A-Truck experience, where kids (and kids at heart) could explore everything from an Indy race car, concrete mixer, and trash truck to antique fire engines, the police SWAT vehicle, a massive Huey helicopter, and even meet the IMPD mounted patrol horses. Attendees witnessed a live vehicle extrication demonstration, gaining firsthand insight into the specialized tools used to cut open cars.
The Kids Zone was packed with fun, featuring bumpy barrel train rides, a giant inflatable, a petting zoo, a kid’s SWAT obstacle course, and more. Attendees also had the chance to visit an extensive vendor area with booths showcasing city services, local charities, and volunteer opportunities, highlighting the many ways the community can get involved.
Thanks to the efforts of Carmel’s first responders and community partners, Public Safety Day continues to be a beloved tradition, combining fun, education, and community connection.
