Dear Editor:
Suburban Hamilton County taxpayers are in for the same shock as Carmel residents have undergone in recent years.
As their debt level goes up, their taxes will follow.
In the last five years:
- Carmel’s total debt increased 29 percent to $1.6 billion.
- Fishers’ debt increased 169 percent to $1.3 billion.
- Noblesville’s debt jumped 166 percent to $753 million.
- Westfield’s debt rose 101 percent to $355 million.
No doubt this comes as a bit of a surprise to most readers.
It’s something to consider as this year’s debt repayment comes out of taxpayer hides:
- Carmel – $83 million
- Fishers – $107 million
- Noblesville – $76 million
- Westfield – $34 million
All these numbers were reported by the cities to the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance.
All of them signal the on-going debt derby that promises not only to raise taxes but to leave our children and grandchildren wondering how we lost our collective civic minds.

Wow, a micro version of our National Debt! We all might run up our own debt if someone else was paying for it! For a measly PropTax credit of 10% with a limit of $300.00 on what is now a$4500. PropTax bill, we can expect to have our Fishers local income tax increase and the Mayor wants to find more revenue (Taxes) for lost funding for the Fishers Health Dept! Stop the Madness please!
You state the debt numbers Bill, but nothing to support the stated premise …
Have the taxes increased correspondingly ? Finish the thought.
Until politicians stop repaying campaign donations on the backs of tax payers debt will continue to rise! Follow the money, which contractors and engineering companies are donating and who gets the work.
I’m quite sure Carmel taxpayers aren’t demanding weird sculptures that cost hundreds of thousand dollar to be sprinkled in places around the city or in the center of roundabouts. I have not heard any demand from taxpayers for highrise apartments and temporary Carmel citizens. No just follow the money. Contractors don’t donate because they like you. Wake up!!
