Ceremony to celebrate life & legacy of late patron Dorothy Bratton

This morning, the Westfield Library Foundation will dedicate the library’s New Titles Collection in memory of beloved community member and lifelong patron, Dorothy Bratton. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, just inside the front entrance of the library, located at 17400 Westfield Blvd.

Dorothy’s son, Tom Bratton, and his wife Angie say they are honored that her memory and passion for reading, education, and community connection will be encapsulated at the library.

“The latest books were such a big piece of how Mom related to people and the world,” Bratton recalled. “She believed books connected us – and she lit up every library she entered, especially Westfield. It’s hard to imagine a better way to honor her than by dedicating the New Titles Collection in her name.”

Dorothy passed away shortly after the new Westfield Washington Public Library opened last June. She was never able to visit the new building in person.

“She was just one of my favorites. I miss her terribly,” Circulation Assistant Susan Scanlon said. “Dorothy was always such a delight. She emanated joy. Always smiling, always so happy – this was her happy place. But she didn’t come in to just get books. She always shared her life with us and wanted to hear everything about ours.”

The public is warmly invited to attend the dedication and help celebrate the legacy of a woman whose life was shaped by books, and whose spirit continues to inspire all who walk through the library doors.
