Baseball: 1A No. 7 Rossville scores late to top Millers

The REPORTER

Monday started another busy week for the Noblesville baseball team. The Millers welcomed Class 1A No. 7 Rossville and the Hornets came away with a 5-4 upset win.

Senior pitcher Adam Gaskill got the nod on the mound for Noblesville. After Gaskill struck out the leadoff hitter, Rossville’s Ashton Abbott reached on an infield single. Nolan Britt followed by getting on by an error from Joe Glander at first, moving Abbott to third.

A single up the middle by RJ Vantuinen plated Abbott to go up 1-0. Evan McDonald followed with a base hit to score Britt for the early 2-0 lead.

The Hornets added to their lead in the top of the second with three more hits, this time off junior Ethan Kang, giving Rossville a 4-0 advantage.

The Millers got the offense going in the home half of the second. Tanner Miller started things off reaching by an error. Aiden Ramsey got on with a fielder’s choice, which forced Miller out at second. Chris Martz then drove Ramsey in on an RBI single to left to cut it to 4-1.

Glander drilled a triple to score Martz and make it 4-2 and got Noblesville down one at 4-3, scoring on a wild pitch.

Trevor Corbett came in to relieve Kang in the fourth, striking out seven through 3.1 frames, slowing down the Hornets.

Miller walked with one out in the bottom of the sixth and was driven in on a triple to the fence in right center by Cole Schott, tying the game 4-4.

Rossville tacked on its final run in the top of the seventh. The Hornets drew three walks and Abbott hit an RBI single that turned out to be the deciding factor.

Hornet pitcher Zac Wainscott struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh for nine strikes in a complete game.

Noblesville (5-8, 1-3 HCC) gets back to Hoosier Crossroads Conference action tomorrow night at Dunker Field against Franklin Central (2-7, 0-4 HCC) with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. The Millers will finish the HCC series Friday night at Franklin Central and then back at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. against perennial Midwest power St. Xavier (Ky.).
