Baseball: Rocks, Golden Eagles win home games

The Westfield baseball team won a battle of ranked teams in a Wednesday home game.

The Class 4A No. 7 Shamrocks took care of 3A No. 8 Cathedral 4-0. Westfield scored all of its runs in the fourth inning. Beck Jordan led off that inning with a single, then advanced to third base when Nick Fero cracked a double into right field.

Ethan Colling drew a walk to load the bases. Johnny Ewing came up next and he smacked a left field line drive to score Jordan and Fero. Later, Drew Law batted in a pair of runs with a base hit, scoring Ewing and Jake Russell, who came in to run for Colling.

Ewing finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate. Sam Flickinger pitched 6.2 innings for the win, striking out four against four hits and no walks. Ian Wilson threw a strikeout for the final out.

Westfield is 7-1 and travels to Brownsburg this evening to begin a Hoosier Crossroads Conference series.

A big second inning helped send Guerin Catholic to a 7-4 home win over McCutcheon Wednesday.

The Mavericks scored the game’s first run in the first inning, but the Class 3A No. 4 Golden Eagles took over in the second inning by putting up five runs. Carson Kail led off with a double, then Jackson Baker came in to run for him. Baker advanced to third base, then Ben Canada and Brody Cain both drew walks to load the bases.

Luke Gremelspacher hit a center field single to score Baker and Canada, then Cain got home on Finn Holden’s RBI sacrifice bunt. Nolan Ratcliff reached on error, Gremelspacher scored on a wild pitch, then Karson Smith brought in Ratcliff with a base hit.

Smith batted in another run in the third inning, when his RBI fielder’s choice scored Cain. McCutcheon put up two runs in the fifth inning, but GC got a run back in the sixth: Gremelspacher scored when Kail was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Gremelspacher had two hits, while Grant Beard also hit a double. Tate Troxell pitched four innings for the win, striking out eight and allowing only two hits.

Guerin Catholic is 5-1 and plays at the PBR Tournament Saturday at Morgan Township. The Golden Eagles take on the host Cherokees at 10 a.m., then play Andrean at 1 p.m.

Hamilton Heights dropped an 8-4 Hoosier Conference home game to 3A No. 3 Western on Wednesday.

The Huskies came out strong, putting up four runs in the first inning. Kyle Michael led off with a single, then Levi Chandler came in to run for him. Chandler was soon home, driven in by Nick Hulen’s left field hit.

Hulen scored on Adam Hughes’ RBI groundout. Later, Jackson Mikesell sent an RBI single into center field, bringing in P.J. Wright. Luke Davis sent a double into right field, scoring Austin Kappes. Heights had a 4-0 lead, but the Panthers took over after that. Western scored six runs in the second inning, then added one more run in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Wright finished the game with two hits.

The Huskies are 2-4 and host Maconaquah on Friday.
