The University girls’ season came to a close Friday night as the Trailblazers fell to Covenant Christian 47-38 in a Sectional 42 semifinal at Monrovia.
Seniors Anyah Turley (15 points) and Taylor Seay (12 points) paced University in scoring. Mack Feeney had 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
The teams exchanged the lead in the opening quarter with Covenant Christian leading 11-8 after one. Gabby Culp had five for University. The Blazers trailed 14-13 with 3:18 left in the first half when Turley hit a three pointer but the Warriors went on a 9-2 run to end the half and take a 23-15 lead at the break.
Turley scored to open the third quarter but Covenant Christian scored the next nine points to take a 32-17 lead just three minutes in to the third quarter. Turley and Seay combined for their own 8-0 lead to cut the lead to seven before Covenant Christian stretched it back to 10 to end the third up 38-28. Turley had ten points in the quarter.
Seay scored seven points in the fourth quarter but the Trailblazers could never get the deficit below six.
The charity stripe was the difference with the Warriors making 13 of 25 free throws while the Blazers were just 4 of 12.
University ends the season with an 8-14 record, losing eight of their last nine. The Trailblazers did win their fifth Pioneer Conference championship in the last seven seasons.
