NOBLESVILLE – The Guerin Catholic boys basketball team picked up a hard-fought win over Cathedral last Saturday.
The Golden Eagles beat the Irish 70-67 in front of a standing room only Eagles Nest. The first half was close, but Guerin Catholic managed to outscore Cathedral in each of the first two quarters. The Golden Eagles were up 15-13 after one period, with Bryson Cardinal scoring six points.
Guerin Catholic led 32-28 at halftime after a balanced second quarter: Six GC players scored at least two points, including four each from Jake Grissom and Jack Toles. Guerin Catholic then started the third quarter strongly, going on a 10-2 run to lead 42-30.
Grissom scored the opening basket of the run, then Ryne Paris made a layin and 3-pointer. Keaton Aldridge interrupted the run with a layin, but Andrew Riethman finished it with a triple to give Guerin a 42-30 lead.
Cathedral used a 6-0 spurt to cut the lead to 42-36, which Cardinal answered with a jumper. Paris made two free throws to get the Golden Eagles back up by 10, at 46-36.
Paris made two free throws to finish the third quarter and give Guerin Catholic a 52-45 lead. The Golden Eagles stayed in front by at least five points for most of the fourth period, withstanding the pressure from Cathedral’s defense while playing solid defense of their own.
“Cathedral’s a great team,” said GC coach Bobby Allen. “They’re a very aggressive team. There’s a reason why they’re the top team in 3A. I think it just came down to a situation where both teams were low on timeouts and we left it in the hands of the players out there. We struggled with their pressure a little bit, but we were able to find some breakaway layups and some big-time buckets that we needed in the end to put us ahead a little bit.”
Grissom scored four straight points (two free throws and a layin) to put the Golden Eagles ahead 60-48. After Cathedral’s Brady Koehler hit a free throw, Paris made a layin to give GC its biggest lead of the game at 62-49. The Irish scored six unanswered points, but Toles’ basket put the Golden Eagles up 64-55.
Grissom stepped up again in the final two minutes of the game, twice scoring points that gave Guerin 10-point advantages. Grissom made two more free throws with 40.1 seconds left, putting the Golden Eagles up 69-59. That allowed Guerin Catholic to withstand an 8-1 Cathedral spurt that finished the game.
Paris scored 19 points, with Grissom adding 18 points. Cardinal reached double-double status with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Paris collected five rebounds. Hayden Rogers dished out seven assists.
Guerin Catholic is 13-2 and hosts Brebeuf Jesuit on Friday for a Circle City Conference game.
