Paul Desha Hicks, 96, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 4, 2025. Born on August 8, 1928, in Cynthiana, Ky., Paul lived a life filled with love, faith, and dedication to others.

Paul was the devoted husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Blake, his beloved wife of 75 years. Together, they built a life centered around family, love, and shared passions.

Paul played basketball in high school and was given a full-ride basketball scholarship to Eastern Kentucky University. He graduated from EKU with a degree in history and physical education. Upon graduating, he played professional basketball for The Reynolds Aluminites and eventually accepted a job with the Reynolds Metal Company.

Paul’s career with Reynolds spanned 39 years, where his dedication and hard work earned him numerous accolades, including Salesman of the Year multiple times. After retiring, Paul continued to share his time and talents by helping his son Jim at White House Donuts, working until the remarkable age of 95.

Outside of work, Paul found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid woodworker, gardener, fisherman, and golfer. Paul was also a passionate Butler basketball fan, rarely missing a game. He cherished family gatherings, particularly when playing euchre with his children and grandchildren.

Faith was a cornerstone of Paul’s life. He served as a deacon at First Baptist Church for many years, providing guidance and support to his community. He also dedicated time to mentoring young men as an assistant scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 103, leaving a lasting impact on many lives.

Paul will be remembered for his warm heart, his generous spirit, and his ability to make friends wherever he went. He truly never knew a stranger.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion that will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Paul is survived by his loving wife, Betty; children, Susan (Mike), Margy, Patty, and Jim (Donna); eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Many loved ones preceded Paul’s death, including his parents, his brother Shearle, and his grandson, Samuel Paul.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Indianapolis. Funeral will follow visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Baptist Church of Indianapolis.
