Westfield was dealt its first loss of the season Wednesday by the No. 1 team in Indiana.
The Shamrocks fell to defending Class 4A state champion Lawrence Central 53-26 at CSI Gymnasium. The Bears scored the first 11 points of the game before Westfield got on the board, but the Rocks were able to stay within 18-8 by the end of the first quarter.
“That was a hard start, but I felt like we responded well,” said Westfield coach Kelsey Steele. “We called a time out and we got some things rolling.”
Westfield played LC even in the next two periods, as both teams scored nine points in the second quarter and seven in the third. Aubrey Crockett scored seven points in the first half. But the Bears ran away with the fourth period, outscoring the Shamrocks 19-2.
Crockett finished the game with 12 points.
“It’s still November,” said Steele. “I just told them, it’s the third game of the year. We’ll find things, we’ll grow from them, we’ll learn from them and we’ll just hope to build off them.”
Westfield is 2-1 and hosts Mount Vernon Tuesday.
