Girls soccer: County teams start week strong

The Carmel girls soccer team had a nice day at its Invitational last Saturday, winning both of its games.

First, the Class 3A No. 3 Greyhounds won an all-county game over 3A No. 19 Fishers 2-0. Olivia Cebalo and Halle Wellman each scored a goal for Carmel. Both made an assist as well, as did Savannah Hindman. Mary Grace Knapp had five saves while recording the shutout.

The Hounds followed that with a 4-1 victory over 3A No. 11 Brownsburg. Cebalo put in two goals, while Camryn Love and Hallie Miller both added one goal. Love and Rosie Martin each made one assist.

Carmel is 5-1 and hosts 2A No. 2 Mishawaka Marian Friday night.

In its other game at the invitational, Fishers played to a 1-1 tie with 3A No. 8 Cathedral. Emerson Huneck scored the Tigers’ goal.

Fishers is 3-2-1 and hosts 3A No. 2 Noblesville tonight in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.

Westfield, the No. 5-ranked team in 3A, won the Evansville Reitz Panther Classic last weekend at Goebel Soccer Complex.

The Shamrocks began last Friday with a 1-1 tie over Highlands from Fort Thomas, Ky. Abby Foulk scored Westfield’s goal. The Rocks returned to action last Saturday and beat 3A No. 6 Castle 3-1. Ava Smith, Addie Colling and Lola Horstman all scored one goal, with Talia Edwards, Reese Sargent and Kate Malin making one assist.

The Rocks clinched the title with a 2-0 win over Lexington Catholic. Stats from that game were unavailable at press time.

Westfield is 4-1-1 and hosts 3A No. 9 Zionsville tonight in an HCC contest.

Hamilton Heights, ranked No. 18 in 2A, took care of Lapel 4-0 in a Tuesday game.

Natalie Marcum scored two goals for the Huskies, while Savannah Deetz and Sarah Toll both put in one goal. Audrey Lang had 15 saves and recorded the goalkeeper shutout.

Heights played to a 1-1 tie with Yorktown last Saturday. Marcum scored the goal, while Lang made seven saves.

The Huskies are 3-1-2 and play University at 6 p.m. tonight.

University cruised past Muncie Burris 5-1 last Saturday in a Pioneer Conference game.

Mack Feeney scored three goals for the Trailblazers, with Bella Miller Krigger and Phifer Whorely both getting one goal. Five different University players had one assist: Miller Krigger, Lia Stennis, Feeney, Whorely and Samantha Purdie. Annie Ingersoll made eight saves as goalkeeper.

The Blazers are 2-0 in conference play and 2-2 overall and play at Hamilton Heights tonight.

Guerin Catholic, the No. 1 team in 2A, beat 2A No. 18 Brebeuf Jesuit 2-1 last Saturday in its Circle City Conference opener.

It was also the first victory of the season for the Golden Eagles, who are 1-2-2. Guerin Catholic hosts 1A No. 13 Bethesda Christian on Thursday.
