Greyhounds, Millers & Golden Eagles claim victories at first tournaments of the year

NOBLESVILLE – The Carmel girls golf team began the 2024 season just like it finished the 2023 season: with a win.
The two-time defending state champion Greyhounds won the Hamilton Southeastern Invitational Tuesday at Stony Creek Golf Club. Carmel’s Blue team scored 308 for the team victory, with the Royals’ Blue team totaling 312 for runner-up honors.
The Greyhounds swept the top three individual positions. Sophomore Maddie Headlee scored a personal-best 73 for the medalist award, senior Sophie Mock placed second with 74 and senior Reese Roudebush carded a personal-best 75 for third place.
“They all have worked so hard on their games all summer long and it’s just great to see it pay off for them in the first tournament,” said Carmel coach Kelly Kluesner.
“I felt like all the wheels were turning,” said Headlee. “My short game was good, my long game was good. I had a few putts I could have done better on, but overall, I had five birdies. I kept playing and keeping it up throughout the round and shot my personal record.”
The Hounds graduated three seniors from last year’s state title team but have experience with Headlee and Mock returning.
“This whole week is just about course management, letting them see what this is all about,” said Kluesner.
Sophie Roberts led the way for the HSE Blue team by scoring 76. Janelle Garcia was next with 77 and Laci Hart scored 78. In addition, Brooke Willard on the HSE White team also scored 76.
“I’m excited for the season,” said first-year Royals coach Peter Salvadori. “I have a really strong cast of three seniors complimented by some up and coming juniors and sophomores. So, I think we got a lot of promise and potential, and then I think today was just a really nice first competition to see what it looks like against other teams.”

Millers win at Bloomington
Noblesville and Westfield, the pre-season Nos. 1 and 2 ranked teams, got right down to business Monday at the Bloomington South Invitational at Bloomington Country Club.
The Millers won the tournament, carding 313. Noblesville had a consistent day, with Josie Kelley placing third individually by scoring 73. Olivia Anderson added 79, while Presley White scored 80. Olivia Fowler’s 83 and Karis Shields’ 89 rounded out the Millers scoring.
The Shamrocks were the tournament runners-up with a score of 321. Senior Addi Kooi went under par to take individual medalist honors, scoring a two under 70. Kelsey Haverluck totaled 77, followed by Sophie Raines 86, Sadie Edwards88 and Anna McKeown 93. Ellison Daggy played as an individual and scored 88.

The Golden Eagles won the Pendleton Preview, which took place Monday at Fall Creek Golf Club in Pendleton. Fourteenth-ranked Guerin Catholic scored 336 to get the win and also swept the top three individual positions.
Ali Scott led the field with 78, followed by Sydney Delagrange’s score of 79. Sarah Rigg placed third overall with 82. Also scoring for the Golden Eagles were Gracie Navarro 97 and Avery Wall 98.
Hamilton Heights also opened its season at Pendleton, placing fifth with 402. Taylor Morrison was the Huskies’ leader with 88, followed by Presley Cherry 91, Tanner Penwell 106, Sammie Powers 117 and Alayna Kauffman 127.

Westfield and Guerin Catholic went right back to work on Tuesday, playing at the Lafayette Jefferson Booster Club Invitational at Battle Ground Golf Club.
The Shamrocks placed second with a 306; Zionsville edged out Westfield for first place with a 304. Kooi tied for second individually, repeating her Monday score by carding a one under par 70. Haverluck carded 75 for sixth place. Rained scored 78, McKeown added 83 and Edwards had 85.
The Golden Eagles finished sixth as a team with 351. Scott scored 76 to lead GC, followed by Delagrange 81, Rigg 94, Navarro 100 and Wall 100.
