Hundreds of former students, staff, families, and community members gathered at Shamrock Springs Elementary on Thursday, Oct. 29, for a farewell open house celebrating the building’s more than 30 years of history before the school transitions to its new facility.
The evening brought together generations of Shamrocks who returned to reconnect with former classmates, colleagues, and teachers, revisit familiar spaces, and reflect on the memories made since the school first opened in 1994.
Throughout the open house, fifth-grade student ambassadors led tours of the building, sharing their school with visitors, while guests also had the opportunity to explore the halls and classrooms at their own pace.
A special portion of the evening featured remarks from current and former school leaders, including Anne Gardener, the school’s inaugural principal who opened Shamrock Springs in 1994 and former principals Dr. Joe Mantalone, Dr. Chris Baldwin, and Robb Hedges.
Speakers reflected on the school’s history, the relationships formed within its walls, and the generations of students and educators who have helped shape its legacy. Baldwin emphasized that while the building itself holds a special place in the community, the heart of Shamrock Springs has always been the people who learn, teach, and grow together.
The current Shamrock Springs building is known for its distinctive architecture (including the famous ramp in the main entrance) and has been a recognizable part of the Westfield community for decades.
While the district recognizes the building’s historical and sentimental significance, aging infrastructure, including roofing and plumbing systems, presented significant challenges. After evaluating the costs of necessary repairs and renovations, constructing a new facility was determined to be a more cost-effective, long-term solution for serving students and the growing community.
The current building will eventually be demolished and replaced with athletic fields, restoring the fields that previously occupied the site of the new school.
As Shamrock Springs prepares for its transition over the coming months, students and staff are looking forward to the opportunities the new building will provide while carrying forward the traditions, relationships, and school culture that have defined Shamrock Springs for more than three decades.
Westfield Washington Schools extends its appreciation to everyone who attended the farewell celebration and helped make the evening a meaningful tribute to the school’s history.
