Sue Maki, a 32-year Hamilton County resident, filed for candidacy for the Hamilton County Council on Tuesday. Maki currently serves as Manager of Environmental Initiatives and Education for Carmel Utilities, where she has been recognized statewide for her work to improve the lives of local residents.

“Two years ago, I ran my first political race for County Council on the district level and lost the Republican primary by only 139 votes,” said Maki. “The reasons I ran then are the same as now. Through my work and my county-wide involvement on many levels, I have acquired an insight and researched the challenges faced by Hamilton County residents – from the small towns of Atlanta and Cicero to the booming cities of Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield. I know I can bring a new perspective now and into the future.”

In Maki’s work with Carmel Utilities, her focus is on research and program implementation, as well as communication and education regarding a variety of topics that hit close to home for local residents. She has been a leader for environmental initiatives in Carmel and plans to bring that leadership a greater level on the County Council.

Maki played an integral role in Carmel achieving the 2016 EPA WaterSense Excellence Award and the 2014 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence for Recycling.  Recently she was named one of Indiana’s 30 “Recycling Rock Stars” by the Indiana Recycling Coalition.

Maki’s leadership across Hamilton County has been vast. She currently serves as President of the Hamilton County Solid Waste Board and has previously served as President of the Hamilton County Tourism Commission, President of The Rotary Club of Carmel and President of the Carmel Middle School PTO.

Making an impact across all towns and cities in Hamilton County, Maki served as Executive Director of the Hamilton County Leadership Academy from 2000 to 2003. She is also a 1999 graduate of that program that fosters the skills of future leaders. Prior to joining the utility company, Maki spent 18 years in the insurance industry, with the majority of those years in a leadership role. She brings a high level of both public and private sector professional experience to her candidacy

Maki holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Anderson University and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Baldwin-Wallace University of Berea, Ohio. She has also earned a variety of professional designations such as Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP).

Maki lives in Carmel with her husband of 37 years, Tom Kapostasy.
