Tennis: University follows up invitational championship by beating Covenant Christian; Noblesville, Westfield, Southeastern enjoy sweet victories

The University tennis team improved its record to 7-2 Wednesday with a 5-0 win over Covenant Christian.

The Trailblazers won all five matches in straight sets. No. 1 singles Laurel Buttrick and No. 2 singles Duygu Arseven both got 6-0, 6-0 shutouts, while No. 3 singles Anisha Patel was a 6-1, 6-2 winner. In doubles, No. 1 Claire Kilgore and Kara Wang were victorious 6-2, 6-1, while No. 2 Sruti Atluri and Lauren Quinto won their match 6-2, 6-3.

“We’re playing real well,” said University coach Brandon Hogan. The Blazers also have season victories over Western Boone, Heritage Christian and Cardinal Ritter, and played Cathedral, currently the No. 18 team in the state, to a 3-2 loss earlier in the season.

University is next in action Saturday at the Pioneer Conference tournament, which takes place at Park Tudor.

Last Saturday, University swept through the Whiteland Invitational, winning the championship for the second consecutive year.

The Trailblazers did not drop a match in beating Shelbyville 5-0, International 3-0 and Whiteland 5-0. Buttrick only lost one game in her three matches. Arseven came back to beat Shelbyville’s Ava Muckerheide 4-6, 6-1, 10-5, then won her next two matches in straight sets.

Kilgore and Wang also swept through their three matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win against International. No. 3 singles Patel and No. 2 doubles Atluri and Quinto won matches against Shelbyville and Whiteland; International did not field players at either position.

Noblesville won a battle of ranked teams on Tuesday, as the No. 17 Millers defeated No. 14 Mount Vernon 4-1 at their Tennis Complex.

Bella Duncan scored a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 1 singles, while No. 2 singles Allie Stamm was a 7-5, 6-4 winner. No. 3 singles Josie Flinchum and No. 2 doubles Ava Shoemaker and Jayde Stamm came back from a set down to win their matches in straight sets.

Noblesville hosts the Hoosier Crossroads Conference meet, which begins today.

Westfield swept Lebanon 5-0 on Wednesday.

The Shamrocks dropped only five games across their five matches, including 6-0, 6-0 wins for No. 2 singles Addi Kooi and No. 2 doubles Carlie Lukowiak and Bri Saylor. No. 1 singles Juliette Grilliot won 6-2, 6-0, No. 3 singles Isla Harvey won 6-0, 6-2 and No. 1 doubles Jenna Berry and Bella Rivera were 6-1, 6-0 winners.

Westfield plays at the HCC meet starting today.

No. 27 Hamilton Southeastern got a 3-2 HCC win at No. 25 Brownsburg on Wednesday.

No. 1 singles Taylor Wolf won her match 6-0, 6-0. The Royals also got wins from No. 2 singles Morgan Filer and No. 2 doubles Naina Patwardhan and Nicole Mathenge.

Southeastern is in action at the HCC tournament today.

Carmel, ranked No. 3, fell to No. 11 Park Tudor 4-1 Wednesday at the Todd Witsken Tennis Center.

No. 3 singles Manogna Pagadala got the Greyhounds win 6-0, 6-1. Carmel hosts No. 14 Center Grove on Friday.
