The Carmel softball team hosted its annual Invitational on Saturday.
The Greyhounds played two games and won both of them in different ways. Carmel came from behind to beat Avon 8-7 in its first contest, then cruised past Penn 10-4 in its second game.
The Greyhounds’ game with the Orioles was back and forth all the way. Playing as the visiting team, Carmel scored in the top of the first inning when Sophie Esposito singled in Megan Nichols.
Avon answered with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the inning, then scored one run each in the second and third innings to lead 4-1. The ‘Hounds got a run back in the fourth inning; Audrey Hussain batted in Esposito with a center field hit.
Carmel surged ahead in the fifth inning by scoring four runs. Ella Ohrvall scored on an error, then Esposito hit a sacrifice fly to send Kylie Cunningham home. Caroline Roop then came up to bat and hit a home run into left field, also scoring Nichols.
Just like that, the Greyhounds were up 6-4. Avon took the lead back in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to lead 7-6. Carmel responded in the top of the seventh: Ohrvall hit a leadoff single, moved to third base on a groundout, then was sent home when Nichols hit a home run. The Greyhounds had the lead, and turned a double play in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Nichols and Esposito both were 3-for-4 at the plate, with Ohrvall and Hussain each getting two hits. Maddie Stacy pitched a complete game for the win.
The Greyhounds also played as the visitors against Penn, and got on the board right away: Cunningham got on base with a triple, then scored on Nichols’ RBI groundout.
The Kingsmen scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and would stay in front until the third inning. Esposito got the ‘Hounds back in front with a two-RBI single, scoring Cunningham and Nichols. Roop then doubled in Esposito, and Carmel led 4-2.
In the fourth inning, Ohrvall doubled in Ella Greenawald, then later scored when Nichols reached on error. Roop led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to give the Greyhounds a 7-2 lead. Cunningham cracked a two-run homer in the sixth inning, also sending Ohrvall home, and Hope McDonald batted in Carmel’s 10th run with an RBI double to score Roop.
Cunningham and Roop each had three hits and batted in two runs, with Cunningham scoring three runs. Esposito also had two RBIs. Emmy Brown got the complete-game victory.
The Greyhounds are 6-6 and host Lawrence Central on Tuesday for a Metropolitan Conference game.
