Baseball: Heights rolls past Elwood in doubleheader

The Hamilton Heights baseball team rolled past Elwood in both games of a Saturday doubleheader at the Huskies’ field.
In the first game, Heights won 11-0 in a four-inning game. The Huskies scored four runs in the first inning, including a three-RBI triple by Drew VanOeveren. Heights added seven more in the second inning. Erik Malott smacked a leadoff triple and scored on a wild pitch. Sam Allen hit an RBI triple as well.
Malott and VanOeveren both had two hits, while Jared Michael hit a double. VanOeveren got the pitching win, striking out 12 in four innings with only one hit and no walks.
The Huskies beat Elwood 19-0 in the second game, also in four innings. Heights scored five runs in the first inning and 14 in the third inning; Malott got the Huskies going in the third with a three-RBI triple.
Malott and Dean Mason both were 3-for-4 at the plate, with Malott driving in four runs and Mason batting in three, including two doubles. Malott and Mason also scored three runs each. Lucas Letsinger also had a four-RBI day. Camden Crawford was the winning pitcher, tossing seven strikeouts against two hits and no walks.
Heights is 6-6 and travels to Northwestern on Tuesday to start a Hoosier Conference series.

Fishers swept a doubleheader at Huntington North on Saturday.
In the first game, the Tigers sailed past the Vikings 13-2 in six innings. Fishers scored two runs in the second inning, then poured in seven runs in the fifth inning, including a three-RBI triple by Zach Cox. In the sixth inning, Caulin Brown delivered an RBI triple, then scored on JP Preston’s single. Dom Oliverio then stepped up and cracked a two-run home run to center field.
Oliverio had an outstanding day, hitting 3-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Matt Bryant, Preston and Jack Braun all scored two runs. Dunn stole five bases, setting an individual school record. Gavin Kuzniewski pitched five innings for the win, striking out five.
The Tigers took the second game 6-2; the contest was called during the sixth inning due to rain. Huntington North scored a run in the bottom of the first inning before Fishers got four runs in the top of the third.
Caulin Brown batted in the first two runs, with a single to score Bryant and Joey Brenczewski. Dunn got home on a sacrifice fly by Oliverio, then Brown scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Gavin Clayton.
Clayton batted in two more runs in the fifth inning, when his left field hit got Preston and Oliverio home. That gave him three RBIs for the game. Kyle Manship pitched the entire game, striking out four.
Fishers is 9-7 and hosts Pendleton Heights Monday for its Senior Night game.

Hamilton Southeastern dropped both games of a doubleheader with Homestead Saturday at Huntington College.
The Royals lost the first game 17-16. Homestead led 2-0 in the first inning, but Southeastern exploded for five runs in the third inning.
Peyton Lusby got the first run on a passed ball, then Payton Hilfiker got home when Hunter Dilts drew a bases-loaded walk. J.T. Mutchner’s single sent Jason Dettman and Noah Wolf home, then Ty Bradle got a base hit to score Dilts.
The Spartans scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to lead 9-5. Southeastern got three of those runs back in the top of the fourth. Dettman was sent home after Dilts drew another bases-loaded walk, then Wolf and Cole Earlewine scored on separate passed balls.
Homestead scored one run each in the fourth and fifth innings to lead 11-8. The Royals answered with six runs in the top of the sixth to take a 14-11 advantage. Earlewine batted in Logan Callaghan, Dettman got home after Mutchner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, then Earlewine got home when Bradle drew a walk. Lusby singled in Dilts, Mutchner scored on a passed ball, and Bradle scored after Dettman drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Spartans grabbed a 15-14 lead with four runs in the sixth, but HSE scored twice in the top of the seventh for a 16-15 lead. Both runs came on bases-loaded walks: Bradle’s walk scored Earlewine and Eli Miller’s walk got Bradle home. In the bottom of the inning, Homestead tied the game with an RBI double, then finished the game with another RBI double.
Lusby had three hits, while Mutchner and Bradle both drove in three runs. Earlewine and Dettman both scored three runs.
The Royals dropped the second game 14-3 in five innings. Southeastern scored two runs in the top of the first inning before the Spartans scored eight in the bottom of the inning.
Mutchner batted in two runs, while Henry Kerr had the lone hit. Colin St. Claire pitched three innings and struck out five.
The Royals are 7-8-1 and begin a three-game series with Fishers on Thursday at Ken Seitz Field.

Noblesville dropped a Saturday evening game to Franklin Community 11-4 at Don Dunker Field.
The Miller scored three runs in the first inning, with Kolbi Kazmierski getting the first run on a wild pitch. Drew Niswonger and Dean White scored after Mason Bohland reached on error.
Bryce Adams hit a home run in the bottom of the third to give the Millers a 4-3 lead. But Franklin tied the game in the fourth inning and then pulled away with six runs in the fifth.
Noblesville is 4-9 and hosts New Castle on Monday.

Guerin Catholic fell to Bloomington South 9-3 in a Saturday afternoon game.
The Golden Eagles scored their first run in the third inning when Clay Patton singled home Adam Novelen. Guerin Catholic added two runs in the fourth inning; Isaac Eaton scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Novelen, then Spencer Wilt scored when Anthony Ferrucci reached on error.
Clay Patton, Davis Wagner and Josh Schaff all had two hits for the Golden Eagles.
Guerin Catholic is 3-10 and plays at Heritage Christian on Monday to begin a Circle City Conference series.
