Heights shuts out Kankakee Valley, Westfield sails past Mount Vernon, Carmel gets victory over Mooresville

The Hamilton Heights softball team opened play Friday at the Twin Lakes Invitational with an 11-0, five-inning win over Kankakee Valley.

Playing as the home team, the Huskies scored at least two runs in all four innings they batted in. That included a two-run home run by Hannah Dent in the second inning. Addie Doak led off the game with a double, then Lily Roush hit a first inning double as well; both eventually scored. Heather Crays smacked an RBI double in the third inning.

Dent totaled three RBIs for the game, with Roush and Kamryn Rhoton both scoring two runs. Roush had two hits and also pitched all five innings. She struck out 10 and allowed two hits.

Heights is 12-5 and plays two games at Twin Lakes today. The Huskies take on Faith Christian at 9 a.m. and West Lafayette at 3 p.m.

Westfield sailed to a 10-4 win Friday at Mount Vernon.

The Shamrocks scored early, with three runs in the first inning. Cara Snedeker batted in Sofia Easterhaus for the first run, Makayla Watson got home on Chloe Tanner’s RBI groundout, then Grace Fanelli singled Snedeker home.

The Marauders scored a run in the bottom of the first, but Westfield got it back in the top of the second. Snedeker picked up her second RBI of the game with a left field hit bring Lilly Amburgey home.

Snedeker struck again in the fifth inning with a single to bring in Watson. Amburgey added another run on Fanelli’s sacrifice fly, and the Rocks led 6-2.

Westfield continued to roll in the sixth inning, with four runs. Lindsey Vaught scored when Snedeker drew a bases-loaded walk, then Tanner’s left field hit brought Watson and Snedeker home. Fanelli added another RBI when her single scored Amburgey.

Snedeker went 3-for-3 at the plate and totaled four RBIs, while Watson was 2-for-2. Easterhaus, Tanner and Fanelli all had two hits, with Tanner driving in three runs. Reese Mahannah hit a double.  Tanner got the pitching win.

The Rocks are 9-9 and host Hamilton Southeastern Tuesday in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.

Carmel turned up its offense in the later innings of its Friday game at Mooresville, and that led the Greyhounds to a 6-5 victory,

The Pioneers scored two runs in the third inning. The Greyhounds broke through in the sixth inning with four runs. Katherine Smith got home on Ellie Goddard’s sacrifice fly, then Mia Fleming blasted a three-run double into center field, scoring Katherine Warren, Alex Longstreth and Jayden Kleiner.

Mooresville got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but Carmel put up three runs in the top of the seventh. Winni Owens got home on Warren’s sacrifice bunt, then Longstreth cracked a right field to double to bring Smith home.

Smith finished with two hits. Gracyn Erickson got the pitching win.

The Greyhounds are 7-14 and play Monday at Fishers.

Hamilton Southeastern was dealt its first HCC loss of the season Friday, falling to Brownsburg 11-1.

The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the third inning. The Royals’ Lani Wyrick got a run back in the bottom of the third with a leadoff home run. But Brownsburg took control of the game in the sixth inning with nine runs.

Wyrick also hit a double, giving her two hits for the game. Grace Swedarsky pitched a complete game, striking out seven.

Southeastern is 4-1 in HCC play and 14-4 overall. The Royals play Monday at Anderson.

Sheridan fell to Alexandria Monroe 13-2 in five innings Friday.

The Blackhawks scored both of their runs in the first inning: Claudia Headlee batted in Abby Dallas, then Shelby Eaton sent Headlee home with a sacrifice fly. Headlee and Eaton both had one hit for Sheridan.

The Hawks are 13-2 and host Taylor Tuesday in a Hoosier Heartland Conference game.
