Running Millers sweep top 3 positions at Saturday’s Early Bird 4K meet in Zionsville

Hamilton County’s young runners took center stage at the John Cleland Zionsville Early Bird 4K meet, which was run Saturday morning at Northview Church in Carmel.

The Carmel boys team and the Noblesville girls team both won their respective Freshman/Sophomore races at the meet. The Millers’ victory was impressive because the team swept the top three positions.

Freshman Ansley Applegate took first place in the girls race, clocking in at 15 minutes, 24.79 seconds. Right behind her were sophomores Riley Flynn in second place and Brinkley Cooper in third place.

The Millers finished with 36 points, just ahead of Hamilton Southeastern. The Royals scored 46 points, with four runners placing in the top 10. Elizabeth Butler finished fourth, Addison Smith was sixth, Catey Campbell took eighth and Anaya Lammie placed ninth.

Carmel’s girls took third in that race by scoring 60 points. Charlotte Konow finished in fifth place, with Ella Gaddis in 10th.

In the boys race, the Greyhounds scored 42 points to win the team title. Jack Capes was the individual champion, finishing in 12:44.94. Carmel had two more top-10 placers: Kiefer Jay took sixth and Carter Buhr was seventh.

Southeastern was a strong second, totaling 52 points. The Royals got a 3-4 finish from Liam Powers and Nicolas Vega, while Zach Swedarsky took 10th.

In the junior/senior races, Noblesville’s girls finished as runner-up to Zionsville. The Eagles won with 61 points, with the Millers scoring 69 points. Nadia Perez was second with Paige Hazelrigg finished eighth.

Carmel took third with 72 points and had three top-10 runners. Jasmine Klopstad led the ‘Hounds by placing fourth, Audrey Ricketts was seventh and Kara Wenzler placed 10th.

Hamilton Southeastern was fifth as a team, and had the race winner: Maggie Powers took first place by clocking in at 14:49.94.

The Royals also placed second in the boys junior/senior race by scoring 59 points. Ash Caylor finished in sixth place while Ian Ross took eighth.

Guerin Catholic hosted the All-Catholic meet on Saturday.

In the boys race, the Golden Eagles were the team runner-up, scoring 53 points. Brebeuf Jesuit won the meet with a total of 35 points, led by a 1-2-3 sweep. Ethan Hines and Jack Weber took fourth and fifth respectively for Guerin Catholic, and all of GC’s top five runners placed in the top 16.

The Golden Eagles’ girls team placed third, scoring 50 points. It was a close meet, with Bishop Chatard scoring 45 points to take the team win. Brebeuf was second with 48 points.

Bridget Gallagher finished third for Guerin, followed by Bailey Freese in fifth place. The Trojans took the top two spots, with Lily Cridge running an astonishing 17:11.0 for the win. Cridge outdistanced her teammate, runner-up Julia Score, by 1 minute and 18 seconds.

The Noblesville boys team scored a dominant victory at the Huntington North Invitational on Saturday.

The Millers took five of the top seven spots to total 19 points, well ahead of runner-up Northridge’s 83 points. Asher Propst won the race in a time of 16:06.7, Jack Strong was second in 16:06.8, and Ronnie Neal placed third in 16:18.7.

Other Noblesville top seven runners were Caden Click (sixth, 16:27.9), Sam Rinker (seventh, 16:30.4), Alec Moore (11th, 16:43.3) and Ashton Burns (38th, 17:30.1).
