Dear Editor:

My name is Kirsten Root. I’m a social worker and candidate for Indiana State Senate District 21. Our campaign recently launched Pack the Pantries, an initiative committing at least $5,000 in campaign funds to stock 19 community food pantries across Hamilton, Howard, and Tipton counties.

Rather than spending every campaign dollar on advertisements and political materials, we’re putting a portion of those resources directly back into the communities we hope to serve.

We’re stocking these pantries with more than traditional nonperishable foods. Our donations include hygiene products, feminine hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and items often considered “luxuries” when families are struggling financially, like seasonings, condiments, and snacks.

As a social worker, I’ve worked with families who are employed but still struggling to afford basic necessities, people living with disabilities, and individuals who fall through the cracks of traditional assistance programs. Community resources like the Yellow Boxes provide an important way for neighbors to help neighbors, often without applications, eligibility requirements, or the stigma that can accompany asking for help.

These pantries also recognize that people need more than canned vegetables to get through difficult times. They deserve access to basic hygiene, household necessities, and the small comforts that many of us take for granted. Dignity is important.

I believe there’s a larger story here about food insecurity, the importance of accessible community resources, and how political campaigns can contribute to their communities before Election Day. You shouldn’t have to win an election to start serving your community.
