State Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fishers) is highlighting public safety legislation he sponsored last session that resulted in Public Question 1 appearing on this year’s general election ballot.
Jeter said Senate Joint Resolution 1 aims to prioritize public safety by proposing a constitutional amendment concerning bail. The amendment would expand judges’ authority to deny bail in certain cases where the evidence is strong and the defendant poses a serious threat to public safety.
Under Indiana’s current Constitution, judges cannot deny bail for offenses other than murder or treason, even when there are serious concerns about a defendant’s potential danger to others.
“Protecting Hoosiers and keeping dangerous offenders off our streets are top priorities,” said Jeter, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee. “When someone poses a serious threat to others, judges should have the authority to consider that danger when deciding whether to grant bail. This amendment is about protecting victims, preventing further crimes, and putting the safety of our communities first.”
In order to appear on the ballot, a resolution calling for an amendment must pass two different General Assemblies. Jeter also sponsored SJR 1 in 2023, which passed the House and Senate. A majority of Hoosiers must vote in favor of the proposed amendment before the Indiana Constitution can be amended.
The Governor shared a video here highlighting the legislation and the lawmakers who worked on it.
State Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fishers) represents House District 88, which includes portions of Hamilton, Hancock, Madison, and Marion counties.
