Westfield sailed to an opening-week victory on Friday, beating Homestead 35-0 at Riverview Health Stadium.
The Shamrocks got on the board early in the first period when senior quarterback Aiden Grabowski ran in for a 10-yard touchdown. Diego Herrera made the extra-point kick, then added more points during the half with two field goals. Herrera connected on a 31-yard field goal with 3:58 left in the first quarter, then made a 29-yard kick to finish the second half, giving Westfield a 13-0 lead.
Deacon King took over in the third quarter. The Northern Illinois commit made two long touchdown runs in the period, the first one a 70-yard sprint less than a minute into the second half. King then ran 50 yards to score midway through the third. The Rocks made a safety late in the quarter to take a 28-0 lead into the fourth.
Cooper Melvin finished the game with a 31-yard touchdown run with 7:22 left in the fourth. Herrera kicked the extra point, which instituted a running clock for the remainder of the game.
King totaled 160 yards rushing. Kaleb Darts made five catches, with Grabowski going 7-of-17 for the game. Olumide Fapetu led the defense with 10 tackles, while Isaac Weingart and Alex Aramboles each made 2.5 sacks.
The Shamrocks travel to Carmel next week for an all-county game.
