The Guerin Catholic football team won its season-opener 30-13 at McCutcheon Friday, Aug. 22.
The Golden Eagles got on the board during the middle of the first quarter when Quentin Klee tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Kolbe Klee. Nick Wilson made the extra-point kick, then added three more points with a field goal at the beginning of the second quarter.
The remainder of the period was scoreless, so Guerin Catholic led 10-0 at halftime. The Mavericks scored late in the third quarter on a short run by Keegun Rice, bringing them within 10-6 going into the fourth quarter.
But the Golden Eagles surged ahead with two touchdowns during the first few seconds of the fourth. Quentin Klee connected with Jack Linden for a nine-yard touchdown pass. Guerin Catholic got the ball back seconds later, and Quentin Klee struck again, tossing a 32-yard touchdown throw to Isaiah Lewis.
Walker made both extra point kicks, and GC led 24-6. Tyler Bingham ran five yards for a McCutcheon touchdown to cut the lead to 24-13, but that would be it for the Mavericks. Walker finished the game with two more field goals.
Quentin Klee had an outstanding game, completing 24 of 33 throws for 301 yards. Lewis made the most receptions with nine, totaling 83 yards, while Aiden Horn gained the most yardage, covering 102 yards with his five attempts.
The Golden Eagles play their home opener Friday, Aug. 29, welcoming Pendleton Heights.
