I’m pretty new here. This is my first year here in Sheridan and I am in 10th grade.

I moved here from Indianapolis. It was a big change for me. Good or bad, you ask – I say good. The people at this school have been nothing but kind to me and I’ve had a great experience at this school and with the people here.

It is very different here; honestly, a lot different from anything I ever knew. What I noticed first was that everyone knows not just names but who people actually are. You see, in my old school environment there were more than 1,000 kids just in your grade, so you couldn’t name all of them and even knew less who they are. Everybody hung out and was friends with each other who did similar things. Here in Sheridan everyone just talks to everyone because it’s such a small, tight-knit community.

At my old school, Ben Davis, I only was there for one year so I didn’t experience high school that much, but I knew you’d meet new people every year and continue to meet new people. Here in Sheridan, almost everybody has known each other nearly forever, which isn’t a bad or a good thing, it’s just different. My old high school had about 3,000 students not including freshmen because they were in a different building called the ninth grade center where I was in my first year of high school. So in total there were around 1,000 kids in every grade. Here in Sheridan, the school population is around 350.

I played on the soccer team at Sheridan High School. The season went okay. We lost a few, we won a few, but we had more wins than losses so that’s good. This was my first year playing with this team and this coach. Our coach was Coach Omar. This was his first year as coach here. I believe he did an amazing job coaching us.

How did the Sheridan High School soccer season go? It went well. Our first game together was a scrimmage against Covenant Christian, a small school in Indianapolis. We lost 6 or 7-0; not our best outcome, but we did work hard, and I got to know how all the players played. Our second game we lost 3-2. It was a very dramatic game. It was very back-and-forth. I scored a late goal, but it didn’t count because the ref couldn’t see the ball go over the line before the goalie hit it out. But after that, we started winning.

I started this season as a defender, but in the end, I ended up being an attacker. This was due to the coach seeing I had the ability to attack to help the team become stronger.

I ended the soccer season with six or seven goals. My biggest game was probably against Carroll High School. I scored two goals and another teammate scored two goals, letting us win 4-1 and taking us closer to winning the HHC – the Hoosier Heartland Conference.

We beat Tri Central next 2-1, which basically took us to the win in the conference against the last-place team in conference. It was a tougher game than we expected, but the outcome was a 2-1 victory in our favor. I assisted Jackson Aleman for a tap-in goal, and Trace Knight scored a header for us to win.

Our season came to an end with our first sectional game against University High School. We tried our best and I scored one goal, but we ended up losing 4-1, ending our season indefinitely.

I am looking forward to next year’s season.
