Kermit Carter

September 30, 1932 – July 15, 2022

Kermit Carter, 89, Sheridan, passed away on Friday afternoon, July 15, 2022, at Riverwalk Village in Noblesville. Born on September 30, 1932, in Laurel County, Ky., he was the son of the late Estill and Virginia (Hughes) Carter.

Honorably serving his country as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean War, Kermit faithfully sent his paychecks back home to help his family with their expenses. He was very proud of his military service and always enjoyed swapping stories with fellow veterans he met throughout the years. After his service was complete, he hired on with Firestone as a production line worker and retired after 31 years with the company.

He was a member of the Noblesville American Legion Post 45 and attended Six Points Church in Sheridan.

Kermit loved the outdoors and always found a good reason to be outside. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and never missed a chance to go down to Virginia, where he walked the mountains and spent time with family. His favorite place, however, was his wooded property at home. Surrounded by nature, Kermit learned to both love and respect the wildlife that also call his property home. He loved to walk the woods, watching the birds and all the critters going about their days, and spending enough time around them that he ended up with a couple opossums and racoons that acted more like pets.

Kermit’s family was a very important part of his life. He always looked forward to going to the sale barn with his brother Logan, and never missed an opportunity to get in a good joke or two, usually at his family’s expense. He loved his grandchildren dearly, and that includes his grand, black lab furbaby, Tippy.

He was a very humble man of strong faith who never turned a blind eye toward anyone who needed help.

Kermit is survived by his sons, Marcus L. Carter of Sheridan, and Kermit Mitchell Carter (Lou Ann) of Evansville; daughter, Janie Renee Spearman (Dan) of Arcadia; eight grandchildren, Ron, Jessica, Danielle, Ashley, Charlie “Chuck”, James, Scottie, and Angie; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Logan Carter and Dexter Carter, both of Sheridan; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Estill and Virginia (Hughes) Carter; two sons, Terry Carter and Ronald Carter, Sr.; brother, Willard Carter; sisters, Eileen Toomey, Lorene Wells, Avinel Carter, and Cora Stinchcomb; and by his loving wife of 60 years, Juanita Helen Carter, on October 13, 2015. She and Kermit were married on June 4, 1955.

Services with Military Honors will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan, with Visitation from 5 p.m. until the time of service.

Kermit will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery in Noblesville at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be presented to Six Points Church, 1545 W. 226th St., Sheridan, IN 46069.
