A musical work rarely played publicly will help celebrate a new chapter for the Carmel Symphony Orchestra (CSO) as it opens its 50th Anniversary Season on Saturday, Oct. 10.

“Fanfare for a New Era,” composed by CSO Board Chair Jerry Torr, will be performed during the orchestra’s opening-night concert, HORIZONS: The Promise of a Vast Land. The concert, presented by Pedcor Companies, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Payne & Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts.
“Fanfare for a New Era” offers a fitting musical statement for this moment in the orchestra’s history, honoring the CSO’s past while looking ahead to its future.
“Fanfare for a New Era” will be part of an opening-night program that looks both to the vast landscape of America and toward the future. The concert also will feature acclaimed guest cellist Alexander Hersh, who will perform Antonín Dvořák’s beloved Cello Concerto with the orchestra. Another highlight of the evening will be guest concertmaster Zachary DePue.
Torr, who has served on the CSO’s Board of Directors since the 2012-2013 season, has a long-standing appreciation for music and the arts. He created the fanfare as a student at the College of Music in Hollywood, Calif.
The evening also will introduce CSO audiences to Music Director David Commanday, who is leading the orchestra as it begins its 50th Anniversary Season. A Pre-Concert Chat with Maestro Commanday will take place from 6:20 to 6:40 p.m. immediately prior to the concert for those who would like to know more about the music on the night’s repertoire:
- Aaron Copland – Fanfare for the Common Man
- Ferde Grofé – Grand Canyon Suite
- Jerry Torr – Fanfare for a New Era
- Antonín Dvořák – Cello Concerto featuring Guest Cellist, Alexander Hersh
