Indianapolis JCRC issues statement on threats against legislators amid redistricting debate

Submitted

The Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) is deeply concerned about the climate of intimidation that has emerged around the proposal to redraw Indiana’s congressional maps at the request of the White House and other out-of-state interests. While members of our community hold a range of views about the merits of the proposed changes, we stand united in rejecting any attempt to influence the political process through threats or coercion.

As a community that has faced threats, harassment, and violence, we feel a responsibility to speak clearly against the recent threats and swatting incidents targeting state legislators. Political violence – whether threatened or enacted – has no place in Indiana, and we firmly condemn it.

The integrity of Indiana’s democratic process must be protected from intimidation and other forms of coercive pressure. Legislative deliberations should reflect the best interests of Hoosiers and take place through open debate, transparency, and respect for democratic norms – not under fear of violence or retaliation.

We urge all state, political, civic, and community leaders to continue responding swiftly and forcefully to any threats of political violence, and to ensure that law enforcement has the tools and support needed to identify and hold accountable those responsible. Hoosiers deserve confidence that their democratic institutions remain free from intimidation.

Recognizing the far-reaching impact of redistricting, we encourage all members of our community to make their voices heard by contacting their state legislators. And we call on all Hoosiers to participate in this debate in a manner consistent with our democratic traditions – not through the use or threat of political violence.
