Girls swimming sectionals: County teams advance many to finals

After a two-day delay, the girls swimming sectional preliminaries finally took place in Hamilton County.
Noblesville is hosting the sectional this year, welcoming Carmel, Guerin Catholic and Westfield to its pool. The Greyhounds are going for a 36th consecutive state championship this year, and they got a head start by qualifying all 27 of their swims to the championship heat of Monday’s sectional finals.
Carmel earned the top seed in 10 of the 11 swim events, including all three relays. Individual top seeds are Alex Shackell in the 50 freestyle and butterfly, Lynsey Bowen in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Berit Berglund in the 100 free and backstroke, and Keira Kask in the individual medley.
Noblesville freshman Maya McDonald is the top seed in the breaststroke event. The Millers also qualified all 27 swims into the Monday final, with 19 going to the championship heat. The other eight advanced to the consolation heat.
Westfield also advanced all 27 of its swims, sending 15 to the championship heat and 12 to the consols. The Shamrocks’ highest seed belongs to its medley relay squad of Alexa Boillat, Alexandra Irvin, Madison Putt and Kathryn Harrison, seeded second in that event.
Guerin Catholic qualified 12 swims to the finals, with five in the championship and seven in the consols. The Golden Eagles’ 400 free relay team of Christianna Dunasky, Bridgette Keller, Erin Reynon and Erica Hunckler is seeded sixth in that event, with Hunckler the seventh seed in the 50 and 100 freestyles.
The diving event took place on Saturday prior to the swimming. Westfield freshman Ellie Lee won the event, scoring 412.70 points. Shamrocks junior Ally Doyle placed third with 332.95 points. Both will advance to the Homestead diving regional Tuesday.
Two Carmel divers advanced to the regional as well. Sophomore Melaina Munson placed second with 353.15 points, while freshman Greta Griffin took fourth with 319.90 points. The top four divers advance to the regional, so that made it a Hamilton County sweep.
