Ty Gingerich needed extra holes to get into the final match at the Indiana Golf Foundation’s Boys State Junior Championship Friday at Purdue University’s Kampen Course.
It was worth the extra work, as Gingerich won the championship. Gingerich, a 2019 graduate of Guerin Catholic, got past Westfield’s Alec Cesare in 22 holes in the semi-finals, then beat Noblesville’s Jacob Deakyne 4 & 2 in the championship round of the match play event.
Gingerich and Cesare were close for their entire semi-finals. Gingerich won the 18th hole to force the match to be extended, and finally won it on the 22nd hole. (Complete birdie totals for the match were unavailable.)
In the final, Gingerich never trailed, taking the lead on the second hole and making six birdies in his round, including one on the 16th hole that clinched the championship. Deakyne had two birdies in his round.
Deakyne reached the final by beating Carmel’s Nick Dentino 3 & 2. Deakyne won three straight holes early to go from being 1 down to 2 up, making six birdies in the match. Dentino made two birdies.
