For families living with muscular dystrophy, something as simple as a trip to the grocery store or a doctor’s appointment can feel like an insurmountable challenge.
On Wednesday, Dec. 10, one Indiana family will receive the gift of mobility and independence when the Muscular Dystrophy Family Foundation (MDFF) presents the Ball Family with the keys to an accessible van.
The key ceremony will take place at noon at Superior Van & Mobility, located at 13095 Parkside Drive, Fishers. Superior Van & Mobility is a longtime partner of MDFF in their mission to restore freedom of transportation to Hoosier families.
The van represents far more than transportation for the Ball Family. Wheelchair accessible vans typically range from $30,000 to $100,000, depending on whether they are new or used and the type of modifications required – a cost that places them far beyond the reach of most families already facing the financial burden of managing a progressive neuromuscular disease.
This van is part of MDFF’s broader Accessible Van Giveaway Program, which annually provides one customized van to an Indiana family suffering from muscular dystrophy. The program has been so successful, MDFF has given away as many as four vans in one year. These vans are life-changing for families navigating the daily challenges of muscular dystrophy – restoring their independence and connection to their community. Without a van these families become isolated by their mobility limitations.
“Every family deserves the freedom to participate in life – to attend school events, visit loved ones, access medical care, and simply enjoy the world around them,” MDFF President Jacob Buehler said. “An accessible van isn’t just about getting from point A to point B. It’s about dignity, independence, and staying connected to what matters most.”
Applications for MDFF’s 2026 Accessible Van Giveaway Program opened Dec. 1, 2025. To qualify, applicants must be diagnosed with muscular dystrophy or a related neuromuscular disease, reside in Indiana, demonstrate a need for mobility transportation, and have the financial resources to maintain insurance, registration, and vehicle maintenance. Access to the online version of the application is at mdff.org/accessible-van-giveaway. A paper version of the application may be requested by emailing info@mdff.org. The application cycle for the 2026-year closes on Feb. 15, 2026.
Beyond vehicle donations, MDFF provides year-round direct financial assistance for equipment and home modifications that can dramatically improve quality of life. The foundation has funded widened doorways, accessible bathrooms, home and van ramps, portable electric wheelchairs, seat elevators, support rails, power wheelchair lifts, stair lifts, and body lifts – modifications that restore dignity and independence to individuals and families facing progressive physical challenges.
“Each modification, each piece of equipment, each accessible van we provide represents one more barrier removed,” Buehler said. “We’re not just changing homes and vehicles – we’re changing lives.”
For families interested in applying for equipment and modification assistance, applications are accepted year-round at mdff.org.
