Fishers Maker Playground to hold first-ever free STEM Day

From building mini robots to driving remote-control cars with VR headsets, families can get a hands-on look at science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) during Fishers Parks’ first-ever STEM Day from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Fishers Maker Playground, 8100 E. 106th St., Fishers.

During the event, visitors of all ages can explore the 15,000 square-foot makerspace, which is typically only available for ages 16 and older. Families can explore the facility, try out equipment, and meet local students and educators who are putting STEM skills to work.

“We are excited to welcome our youngest makers and innovators into Maker Playground,” Fishers Parks Director Marissa Deckert said. “STEM Day brings creativity to life through exciting, hands-on experiences. From robotics and high-powered rockets to 3D printing and power tools, we’re inspiring curiosity and empowering the next generation of innovators.”

Activities and demonstrations include:

  • Watch competition robots in action with Fishers High School’s award-winning robotics team.
  • Check out a student-built electric go-kart from Purdue Polytechnic Anderson.
  • See demos on 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machines.
  • Drive a remote-control car using a VR headset.
  • Build your own bristlebot, a miniature robot powered by vibrations.
  • Explore the science behind high-powered rockets.
  • See limestone carving demonstrations.
  • Test out a variety of tools like drills, hammers, and screwdrivers at the Power Tool Petting Zoo.

STEM Day brings together local businesses, educators, and organizations, including Fishers Robotics, Purdue Polytechnic Anderson, Ivy Tech, local 3D printing distributor Fabricate, and Tanaka Chonyera of Maker Playground’s High-Powered Rocket Bootcamps. Visitors can also meet the educators behind Maker Playground’s fifth-grade Make 5 program in conjunction with Hamilton Southeastern Schools and learn about other STEM opportunities.

Maker Playground is Fishers Parks’ public makerspace featuring professional-grade equipment for woodworking, metalworking, 3D printing and more. Memberships are available for students ages 16 and older and adults, with upcoming classes open to the public, including 3D Making: 3D Printing on Nov. 17, Household Heroes: Doorknob + Lockset Installation on Nov. 18, and Porch Goose Festive Outfit Workshops on Nov. 21, Dec. 10 and 19.

STEM Day is free and open to all ages. Visitors can stop by anytime between noon and 5 p.m. No registration is required. Learn more about STEM Day, Maker Playground memberships and upcoming classes at FishersMPG.com.
