Cross country: Fishers sweeps State Preview Meet

The Fishers cross country teams swept the Terre Haute Savings Bank State Preview Meet, which took place Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, the annual site of the IHSAA state finals.
In the girls race, the Tigers dominated by scoring 62 points, well ahead of runner-up Cathedral’s 126. Six Fishers runners placed in the top 20, led by freshman Vera Schafer, who took 10th. Emma Gillespie was right behind with an 11th-place finish. Also landing in the top 20 were Elizabeth Barrett (13th), Tessa Kraft (15th), Abby Carter (18th) and Miya Wai (19th).
“It was another hot day of racing, but the heat didn’t stop the Tigers from coming home with a victory,” said Fishers coach Beth Jahns. “The girls took advantage of their depth and ran in a pack to dominate the field of runners.”
Westfield placed third, just edged out by the Irish by one point (127). Sarah Coates led the Shamrocks by taking 20th place individually.
Guerin Catholic finished sixth by scoring 159 points and also had the highest-placing Hamilton County runner: Ellie Schroeder took ninth. Paige Schemanske finished in 17th place.
In the boys race, Fishers won by scoring 99 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up Homestead’s 122 points. The Tigers got a top 10 finish from Ethan Meyer, who placed 10th, while Will Clark finished in 13th. Dylan Arive was 23rd and Quintin Goldman took 25th.
Westfield scored 208 points and finished seventh as a team. Max Gutwein’s 34th place finish led the Shamrocks. Guerin Catholic took 12th as a team with 333 points, but had the county’s highest-placing individual: Quinn Gallagher took sixth.

The Carmel and Noblesville girls teams competed in the Marion Invitational on Saturday.
The Greyhounds finished second with 77 points; Fort Wayne Carroll won the race by scoring 49 points. Carmel’s Phoebe Bates was the individual winner, cruising home in a time of 17:39.3. Lindsey Roper placed 11th and freshman Jamie Klavon finished 13th.
The Greyhounds also won both junior varsity races, scoring a perfect 15 points in the freshman/sophomore and junior/senior races. Tori Manlick and Lily Rose led the way in the freshman/sophomore race, with Elle Nichol and Emily Hand pacing the junior/senior race.
“Our goal was to see how we would match up in a very fast and competitive meet,” said Carmel coach Andy Dalton. “Many of the top runners and the teams in the state this year were present. We aren’t necessarily pleased with our results as a team, but we still accomplished what we needed to and realized that we have plenty of work to do before the IHSAA tournament starts in October. It was terrific to see our young athletes continue to improve and compete. The JV races highlighted the great depth that our team has this year.”
Noblesville scored 99 points to take third place as a team. Taylor Gregory, Bella Sharples-Gordon and Sophie Reichard finished 17th, 18th and 19th respectively, then Madison King and Aubrey Swart took 22nd and 23rd to finish the Millers’ scoring.
“Another solid performance from your Miller Cross Country team,” said Noblesville coach Dennis Scheele. “The Millers’ top five were separated by 12 seconds.”

Noblesville’s boys competed in the Columbus North Invite on Saturday, finishing fourth.
Travis Hickner led the Millers by taking seventh, clocking in at 16:23. Blake Hipkiss was 13th, finishing in 16:42.
