County Democrats recommend two women for Fishers police, fire merit commissions

Editor’s note: The two women were not named in the news release from the Hamilton County Democratic Party.

The Hamilton County Democratic Party is requesting immediate support from Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness to bring the Police and Fire Merit Commissions into compliance with state code, which mandates a minimum of two Democrats on each of the five-member commissions.

In an effort to ensure balance at the community level, the code dictates that party affiliation is determined by their three most recent primary elections.

“The City of Fishers has skirted the mandate by including historically Republican commission members who have voted for a Democrat only once in recent history, which is not a true representation of how they will govern, and thus represents a conflict,” said Hamilton County Democratic Party Chair Dayna Colbert.

In light of the pending change, two women have applied for the Police and Fire Merit Commissions and have been officially recommended to the city by the Hamilton County Democratic Party.

“We are asking the city to act swiftly to come into compliance and support our efforts to bring proper representation to each community commission. This new year creates the opportunity for a fresh and fair start,” Colbert said. “Both women are engaged, well-informed Fishers residents who will bring great value to their roles.”

The Police and Fire Merit Commissions were established to give the community a voice in promotions, disciplinary actions, applicants to the fire or police departments, and more. It is essential that these bodies represent more than one political party.
