Clerk’s Office releases “officially unofficial” election results

Final results to be released on June 12 after provisional ballots counted

The Hamilton County Clerk’s Office on Wednesday released an updated version of Tuesday’s “unofficial” primary election results. According to County Clerk Kathy Williams, the final results will be released to the public after the provisional ballots are counted at noon on Friday, June 12.

So why does the public have to wait 10 days to know the final results?

In Indiana, if a voter does not have the required or correct documentation – such as a photo ID – to cast a ballot on Election Day, that voter may choose to issue a “provisional” ballot. The voter then has 10 days to present the required or corrected documentation to county election officials.

According to Williams, this primary election there are five provisional ballots waiting to be verified and counted.

Current State Senator Victoria Spartz came out on top in a crowded field in the 5th District Congressional Republican primary with nearly 40 percent of the vote. Republican Scott Baldwin bested fellow Republican JR Gaylor in that party’s race to replace Spartz after she vacates her seat next January. Baldwin garnered 68 percent of the votes.

In the GOP race for County Treasurer, Susan Byer won a spot on the November ballot, keeping former Treasurer Kim Good from retaking her role. Byer beat Good by a near-2,000 vote margin.

In the contest for the three at large seats on the County Council, two incumbents will not return next year: Rick McKinney and Jeff Hern. Sue Maki and Steve Nation will be two of the Republican nominees. Brad Beaver maintains his spot on the November ballot.

Commissioner Steve Dillinger was able to keep his place on the November ballot as well, securing more than 61 percent of the vote to challenger Charlie McMillan, Jr.’s 38 percent.
