Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR) will hold its first sensory-friendly trick-or-treat walk on Saturday, Oct. 19. This festive fall experience will take place along the Central Park East trails from 1 to 3 p.m.
Inclusion is one of CCPR’s core values, and the organization works diligently to provide programming for all ages and abilities for the community. Sensory-friendly events are part of CCPR’s adaptive programming designed for individuals with disabilities.
Sensory-friendly events are structured for individuals with sensory needs, taking into account auditory, visual and olfactory levels so the event is comfortable and inclusive for all participants. There will be no loud music, scary decorations or people dressed in masks or full-body costumes.
“We want this to be an event where all kiddos can enjoy trick-or-treating without anything scary or upsetting,” said Michelle Yadon, inclusion supervisor for CCPR. “The sensory-friendly trick-or-treat walk will give Halloween enthusiasts – of all ages and abilities – an enjoyable experience with their family and friends.”
The trick-or-treat loop is accessible and short, and trick-or-treaters can go around the trail multiple times. Volunteers from CCPR’s adaptive program will pass out treats in fun, non-frightening costumes. We ask that all trick-or-treaters wear friendly costumes that wouldn’t frighten anyone else. No masks, please.
