Boys soccer: Millers upset Pike, Huskies win at Invite

The Noblesville boys soccer team got another big win on Saturday morning, upsetting Class 3A No. 17 Pike 1-0 in an away game.
After a rough start, the Millers got going in the second half. A combination play between Braden Cofer and Spencer Holland allowed Drew Barnes to post up right in front of the Pike goal. Holland slotted a ball across and Barnes kicked it into the upper 90 to the near post for the goal. The Millers held on for the win, despite the Red Devils’ high pressure.
Noblesville is now 6-5-1 for the season, the first time the Millers have been above the .500 mark. Noblesville will travel to Franklin Central on Tuesday for a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.

Hamilton Heights won the first game of its Husky Invitational on Saturday, 5-1 over Crispus Attucks.
The 2A No. 17 Huskies had goals in the first half from Donovan Trew, Luke Vanderwall and Josh Thorpe. Zach Clark made one assist. In the second half, Nate Jozsa and Will Hilton each scored, with Sam Blake assisting Hilton’s goal.
“All 23 players for the Huskies received great minutes on the field,” said Heights coach Derrick Dean. “Caleb Grabarz recorded six saves on the game. Luke Vanderwall received player of the game with his great runs from the back field and free kick goal. Great win.”

The 1A fourth-ranked University Trailblazers defeated Indianapolis Shortridge 5-0 in the Pioneer Athletic Academic Conference third place game.

Senior Coghlin Kumler scored on a corner kick with 14:08 remaining in the second half for the Blazers fourth goal.  Gailey served a perfect cross in front of the goal and Kumler rose up and headed the ball in the net.

Jacob Sager earned the clean sheet in goal as University improved to 8-3-1.
While disappointed to not be playing the PAAC championship game (University lost to PAAC champion Seton Catholic on penalty kicks earlier this month), coach Wes Priest is pleased with how his team is playing.  “We are starting to round in to form.  We are playing really well.  We have a big game Monday with Greenwood Christian as we get ready for a really tough Sectional.”
The Blazers play 1A seventh-ranked Greenwood Christian at home Monday.  University will close out the regular season with road games at Western Boone and Tri-West before entering Sectional play.

Carmel, ranked No. 14 in 3A, tied 3A No. 16 Homestead 1-1 in a Friday evening game at Murray Stadium.
Junior Babacar Diatta scored the Greyhounds’ goal, with Drew Finkam making the assist.
“It was definitely an energetic game tonight,” said Carmel coach Shane Schmidt. “I felt as though we played well. We missed some opportunities we should have capitalized on, but our ball movement was good and I felt that we defended well again.”
The ‘Hounds are 3-1-7 and will play at Pike on Tuesday.
