‘Blazers fall to Tri-West

The University girls had their 16-game winning streak snapped Thursday night by Tri-West 57-48.
The Bruins made 7 of 8 foul shots in the final 59 seconds to pull away from a 50-48 lead to take the contest that saw the teams make a combined 38 of 47 free throws.
University held a 35-25 halftime lead and took a 37-25 advantage on the first possession of the third quarter on a Payton Seay basket, but University scored just three points the rest of the third quarter as Tri-West battled back to take a 42-40 lead entering the final period.
The Trailblazers took their last lead of the game with 3:02 remaining when Kelsey DuBois scored for a 48-47 lead. University would not score again. Tri-West took a 50-48 lead with 1:50 remaining on an old-fashioned three-point play by Adrie Thompson. The basket by Thompson was Tri-West’s only field goal of the final quarter as the Bruins made 13 of 15 foul shots in the fourth period.
Seay led University in scoring with 17 points and pulled down five rebounds. DuBois had 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Isabelle Saylor led Tri-West with 24 points. Saylor had 15 of the Bruins’ 25 first-half points. Kenna Kirby scored all 17 of her points in the second half, including an 11-for-12 performance at the foul line in the fourth quarter. Thompson had 11 points including 7 of 8 free throws.
The Class 2A No. 4 Trailblazers are now 18-3 and close out the regular season Saturday afternoon against Class 2A No. 5 Tipton at The U Center. The junior varsity contest begins at noon with the varsity game to follow.
