SHERIDAN – Sometimes, a win is simply a win.

That was the case for the Sheridan girls basketball team on Thursday. The Blackhawks overcame foul trouble, free-throw struggles and a tough Covenant Christian team to get an overtime victory 55-46 at Larry Hobbs Hall. It’s Sheridan’s first win of the season.

“It was certainly an ugly game, an ugly win, but a win is a win,” said Blackhawks coach Jaidlin Bradshaw. “They picked it up when it mattered and figured it out in that last four minutes and found a way to put the ball in the basket from the free-throw line. So we’ll take it.”

Sheridan played from behind for much of the fourth quarter, trailing by four points (38-34) at the start of the period, then again at 40-36. Baskets by Cecilia Timme and Mac Smith got the Blackhawks back even at 40-40.

The Warriors jumped back in front 43-40 with 1:55 left, but Sheridan made another surge, getting ahead 45-43. Kenzie Garner made three free throws, then Brielle Garner pushed the ‘Hawks up 45-43 with a layin.

Two foul shots by Covenant’s Avery Reichart tied the game at 45-45, and that would be the score at the end of regulation. Sheridan would dominate the overtime, outscoring the Warriors 10-1. Timme took over the game in the extra period, scoring eight points.

The Blackhawks also had solid rebounding and defense during the overtime as well.

“We don’t win that game without Brielle Garner playing defense on their point guard like she did,” said Bradshaw. “It would have been a totally different game if she couldn’t have stepped up and played some defense, so she did a really nice job. I’m really proud of her effort.

“I’m really proud of the whole team’s effort. I think we had three or four kids with four fouls that did a good job of stepping up and playing good defense in a high-pressure situation.”

Covenant led 15-14 after one quarter, with Kenzie Garner scoring six Sheridan points. The Blackhawks’ defense then took over in the second period, limiting the Warriors to three points and enabling Sheridan to take a 21-18 halftime lead. The Warriors poured in 20 points during the third quarter, but Kenzie Garner and Shelby Eaton both had five points in that period to keep the ‘Hawks in the game.

Kenzie Garner scored 20 points, while Brielle Garner had nine points.

Sheridan is 1-2 and hosts Elwood on Saturday night.
