Baseball Roundup: Hounds come back to beat Rocks, Heights, GC get conference victories

The Carmel baseball team scored a come-from-behind victory over Westfield on Monday, winning 6-5 in eight innings at the Shamrocks’ field.

Westfield led 4-0 after four innings. Ian Wilson scored on an error in the first inning, then Ian Wilson got home when Tyler Gentry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third inning. The ‘Rocks got two runs in the fourth: Caden Lindsey scored on error, then Brayden Hibler was brought in by Matt Drozlek’s right field hit. Hibler hit a double to get on base.

The Greyhounds got on the board in the fifth inning when JD Stein drove in Tyler Walkey with a right field hit. Westfield got the run back when Logan Hoffman scored on Nick Fero’s RBI fielder’s choice.

Carmel put up four runs in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Walkey scored on a wild pitch, Stein got home when Nash Skelton drew a bases-loaded walk, and Joe Cunningham singled home Gabe Mathison and Hunter Snow to tie the game. Silas Neal scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning on a wild pitch.

Parker Heaney got the pitching win. Ethan Colling hit a double for Westfield, while Owen Swinford struck out eight over four and two-thirds innings.

Carmel is 9-1 and hosts Louisville Trinity on Saturday for a doubleheader. Westfield is 8-1 and begins a Hoosier Crossroads Conference series with Fishers Thursday at the Tigers’ field.

Hamilton Heights cruised past Tipton 10-0 in a five-inning home game Tuesday for a victory in its Hoosier Conference East opener.

The Huskies scored two runs in the second inning and six in the fourth, including a grand slam by Dean Mason. Heights then finished the game with two more runs in the fifth inning. Kyle Michael batted in both of those runs, as his left field single sent John Irion and Adam Hughes home.

Hughes and Dillon Pitts both hit a double as part of a 2-for-3 night. Nick Hulen pitched all five innings, striking out 11 and allowing three hits.

The Huskies are 2-5 and play at Tipton this afternoon to finish the series.

Guerin Catholic picked up a 5-2 Circle City Conference win at Brebeuf Jesuit on Tuesday.

The Golden Eagles scored their first run in the third inning when Tate Troxell doubled Kam Smith home. Smith batted in Nolan Ratcliff for a fourth-inning run. Nate Gremelspacher sent a two-RBI hit into left field in the fifth inning, scoring Troxell and AJ Nunley.

Troxell and Gremelspacher both had two hits. Davis Wagner threw six innings for the win, tossing five strikeouts.

The Golden Eagles are 2-1 in the conference and 6-1 overall, and host Brebeuf today to complete the series.

University ran away with its game at Lewis Cass on Tuesday, scoring seven runs in the seventh inning to beat the Kings 15-4.

Cass scored three runs in the first inning before the Trailblazers put up six in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Four different University players – Ryan Castetter, Cooper Burnett, Cooper Cammack and Beckett Suh – all hit one double. Castetter’s fourth-inning double sent two runs home, he finished with three RBIs in total.

Charlie Ranek had three hits for the ‘Blazers. Cam Rady was the winning pitcher, with five strikeouts in two and a third innings.

University is 4-3-1 and hosts Brownsburg tonight at RoundTripper Academy.
