Baseball Roundup: Golden Eagles earn conference win; Rocks drop 11-inning game to No. 1 Trojans; Carmel, Sheridan, HSE & University fall

The Guerin Catholic baseball team won a Circle City Conference game 3-0 over Heritage Christian in a Monday home game.

Davis Wagner blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to get the Class 3A No. 2 Golden Eagles on the board. AJ Nunley also scored. Grant Beard followed that with a solo homer in the second inning.

Wagner finished the game 2-for-2, also hitting a double. If that weren’t enough, Wagner pitched a complete-game shutout, tossing seven strikeouts.

Guerin Catholic is 4-0 in the conference and 10-2 overall. The Golden Eagles’ scheduled Tuesday game with Heritage was postponed; Guerin Catholic next plays Thursday at Carmel.

Westfield played a marathon game at Center Grove on Monday before the 4A No. 1 Trojans won 12-11 in 11 innings.

The 4A No. 9 Shamrocks blasted out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Logan Hoffman’s center field hit scored Matt Drozlek for the first run. Westfield loaded the bases, then scored five straight runs. Alex Rudolph, Ben Wasserstrom and Tyler Gentry all drew walks, scoring Drew Law, Hoffman and Jake Russell. Nick Fero was hit by a pitch, bringing Rudolph home, then Brayden Hibler was walked to score Wasserstrom.

The Trojans got three runs back in the bottom of the first inning. Westfield scored two in the second inning, with Rudolph’s double scoring Law and Hoffman.

Fero got a two-run hit in the fourth inning, a left field single to bring in Rudolph and Wasserstrom. Center Grove stormed back to within 10-8 by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth, then tied the game with two more in the fifth.

The Trojans took an 11-10 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but Fero tied the game in the seventh by scoring on an error. The game made its way to the bottom of the 11th, where the Trojans scored on an RBI fielder’s choice.

Fero and Hoffman both had two hits. Jackson Blevins pitched five and two-thirds innings, striking out seven.

Westfield is 9-5 and hosts Noblesville Thursday for a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.

Carmel fell at Avon Monday in a marathon game, 7-6 in 10 innings.

Gabe Mathison batted in a run for the 4A No. 2 Greyhounds in the first inning, as his left field hit scored Tyler Walkey. But the Orioles scored two in the bottom of the first to take the lead.

Carmel tied the game in the top of the third when Parker Heaney’s center field hit brought in Hunter Snow. The Orioles jumped ahead with three runs in the bottom of the third and led 5-2.

Snow hit a fourth-inning sacrifice fly to score Silas Neal. The Hounds tied the game again in the fifth inning: Nash Skelton led off with a double then got home on a wild pitch. Neal scored when Snow drew a bases-loaded walk.

The score stayed 5-5 until the top of the 10th inning, when Walkey got home on a passed ball. But Avon tied the game with an RBI triple, then a base hit scored the winning run.

Walkey went 3-for-5 at the plate.

Carmel is 9-4 and hosts Guerin Catholic on Thursday.

Sheridan dropped a 10-8 game to Frankton at home Monday.

The Eagles scored five runs in the top of the first inning. The Blackhawks responded with three runs in the bottom of the first: Cole Mackintosh singled in Jack Oland, Camden Spencer’s left field hit brought in Zach Bales, and Jack Crail scored on Chance Spencer’s RBI fielder’s choice.

Frankton put up two runs in the top of the second inning, but Sheridan scored three in the bottom of the inning. Caleb Alexander, Dayne Voege and Crail all got home and cut the Eagles’ lead to 7-6.

Frankton scored in the top of the fourth to lead 8-6. The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Alexander was brought home by Bales’ left field hit, then Voege scored after Crail reached on error. The game was tied 8-8 going into the seventh, but the Eagles scored twice in the top of the inning to get the win.

Bales and Mackintosh both had two hits, while Alexander cracked a double. Clinton Slopsema threw six strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings.

Sheridan is 6-4 and hosts Tri-Central on Thursday.

Hamilton Southeastern fell to Homestead 4-0 on Monday.

The Royals were held to one hit, a double by Parker O’Steen. Starter Dylan Cope tossed five strikeouts in three innings, while reliever Michael Hoog threw six strikeouts for Southeastern in four innings.

The Royals are 7-7 and begin the Mudsock series with Fishers on Thursday.

University dropped a 13-4 game to Lapel Tuesday at RoundTripper Academy.

The Trailblazers scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Cooper Burnett sent a triple into right field to score Jasper Owens, then later scored when Owen Schellhase hit a sacrifice fly.

The Bulldogs put up five runs in the top of the second inning and would not trail again. University scored two more in the bottom of the second, with Cooper Cammack cracking a triple to center field to bring in Jimmy Caldwell. Cammack scored on Charlie Ranek’s RBI groundout.

Caldwell finished the game with two hits. Beckett Suh pitched four and a third innings, striking out five.

The Blazers are 7-5-1 and host Seton Catholic Friday in a Pioneer Conference North game.
