Westfield lost a tough Hoosier Crossroads Conference game on Friday, falling to Avon 59-57 at CSI Gymnasium.
The Orioles led 19-14 after the first quarter. The Shamrocks, ranked No. 7 in the IBCA one-class poll and No. 10 in the Associated Press Class 4A rankings, cut into that lead slightly by halftime, narrowing Avon’s advantage to 30-27. Cam Haffner scored 13 points in the first half.
The Orioles were up 47-43 after three periods. The two teams continued to battle in the fourth quarter. Avon led 57-54 with 30 seconds to go. Westfield tried a 3-pointer that didn’t go, but the Shamrocks got the offensive rebounds and sent the ball to Haffner, who drilled a 3 to tie the game. But the Orioles took the inbound and went the length of the floor to score the winning basket.
Haffner scored 25 points, including six 3-pointers, while Alex Romack added 14 points, including six in both the third and fourth quarter.
Westfield is 1-4 in HCC play and 12-5 overall. The ‘Rocks host Liberty Christian tonight.
