The Guerin Catholic baseball team opened play at Class 3A Sectional 27 at Bishop Chatard with a 6-2, eight-inning victory over Brebeuf Jesuit on Wednesday.
The Braves led early, scoring a run in the first inning and another in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles tied the game with two runs in the fifth inning. Sam Tabor cracked a two-RBI double into right field, scoring Karson Smith and Will Fremion.
The score was still tied at 2-2 after the regulation seventh inning, so it was on to extras. Guerin Catholic only needed one extra inning, putting up four runs in the top of the eighth. AJ Nunley brought in Bryson Dorsey for the go-ahead run with a bunt single, then moved to second base. Smith’s left field line drive scored Nunley.
Fremion was next, and his left field double brought in Smith. Ian Taylor was next up to bat, and his line drive went into right field and scored Fremion. The Golden Eagles then quickly took care of Brebeuf in the bottom of the eighth with a pop out and two strikeouts from Davis Wagner. He pitched all eight innings, striking out seven and allowing just four hits.
Wagner also had a perfect night at the plate, going 3-for-3. Taylor had two hits and Dorsey hit a triple.
Guerin Catholic is 25-2-1 and plays the host Trojans Saturday afternoon in the Sectional 27 semifinals.
