There is a tight battle for the team championship at the IHSAA girls golf state finals, which began Friday at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel.
Center Grove leads the team standings after the first round with a score of 320. Carmel is right behind with a 323; the Greyhounds led for most of the day before the Trojans made a late run to the top of the leaderboard.
Ava Nguyen and Claire Swathwood both scored 8-s for Carmel, with both making two birdies. Kamryn Williams also had a pair of birdies in her first round, with Sophie Mock and Michaela Headlee both getting one.
Westfield is in seventh place currently with a score of 335. Samantha Brown got going during the later part of her rounds and is tied for fifth place individually with a 78, draining three birdies along the way. Addi Kooi carded a 79 and is tied for eighth, she made one birdie.
Hamilton Southeastern finished the first day in eighth place as a team with a 347. Janelle Garcia led the Royals with a score of 83.
Noblesville is right behind Southeastern, currently in ninth place with a 348. Caroline Whallon had a strong start to the tournament and is part of the fifth-place tie with a 78. Josie Kelley and Jordan Adam both made one birdie in their opening round.
Play continues today, with the first golfers teeing off at 8 a.m.
