The Westfield Police Department (WPD) is accepting applications for the 2022 Citizen’s Police Academy.
The academy was established to promote an understanding of WPD and its policies and procedures. In addition, the academy provides training in many aspects of law enforcement and the issues that face police officers daily.
WPD’s goal is to foster a spirit of cooperation between the city, its citizens and their police department. Graduates will get to know more about the men and women protecting their community and why they make the decisions they do while performing their duties.
The Citizen’s Police Academy is a 10-week program between Sept. 8 and Nov. 10. Classes are held from 6:30 to approximately 8:30 p.m. on Thursday nights. Class size is limited to 30 participants. The academy is provided free of charge.
Some of the general topics discussed include:
- Emergency services, crisis negotiations, drone and k9 units
- Crime scene processing
- Patrol and criminal investigation operations
- Active assailants
- Traffic stops and impaired driving investigations
- Firearms
- Tour of Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and the jail
Potential candidates for the Citizens Police Academy must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum age of 21 years old
- No criminal convictions (never been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor)
- Subject to criminal history check
