Softball: ‘Hounds, Millers cruise to first-round wins

Carmel and Noblesville won Sectional 8 first-round games on Monday.
First, the Greyhounds beat Hamilton Southeastern 11-1 in five innings. Carmel scored in each inning, starting with an Elsa Morrison RBI groundout to send Sophie Esposito home. That would the first of four RBIs for Morrison in the game. She went 3-for-4 at the plate, with all three hits doubles, including the game-ending double that scored two runs to get Carmel the 10-run lead.
Esposito also hit two doubles, while Maddie Stacy smacked a two-RBI double in the fifth inning. Stacy totaled three RBIs for the game, and also was the winning pitcher, striking out five in four and one-third innings. Hope McDonald scored three runs.
Lani Wyrick batted in the Royals’ run in the fifth inning, scoring Emma Vance with a line drive into left field. Wyrick had two hits for Southeastern, which finished its season 15-11.

In the second game, Noblesville beat Westfield 9-3.
The Millers started with a run in the first inning; Reis Sjoholm scored when Scout Duplaga reached on error. Noblesville added two runs in the third inning when Sjoholm singled in Kira Thomas and Duplaga hit a double to score Sjoholm again.
Duplaga cracked a two-run double in the fifth inning, sending in Gabby Fowler and Lauren DeRolf. The Millers finished their scoring with four runs in the sixth: Tatum Ball singled in Taylor Thompson, DeRolf batted DeRolf home, and Duplaga sent a single into center field to score DeRolf and Sjoholm, giving her five RBIs for the game.
Sjoholm had three hits as well. Emme Yee went five and two-thirds innings for the pitching win.
The Shamrocks scored one run in each of the last three innings. Cara Snedeker doubled in Maggie Roh for a fifth-inning score, Marin Seyferth’s center field double sent Rylie Redstone home in the sixth inning, and Indiana University-bound Avery Parker led off the seventh inning with a home run.
Chloe Tanner hit a triple for Westfield, which finished its season 15-10. Snedeker totaled two doubles.
