Baseball roundup: Millers, ‘Hounds get all-county victories

Noblesville pulled away from a back-and-forth game with Westfield Thursday, winning the Hoosier Crossroads Conference series opener 8-6 at the Shamrocks’ field.
Class 4A No. 4 Westfield scored the game’s first two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Mac Clarke led off with a single, then advanced to third base on a double by Maximus Webster. Both would eventually score on errors.
The Millers rebounded with three runs in the top of the second inning. Bryce Riggs started the inning with a triple, then scored after Josh Kern reached on error. Luke Wilson later batted Kern home, then scored on Drew Niswonger’s sacrifice fly.
Riggs doubled in Kolby Kazmierski in the top of the third to get Noblesville up 4-2. The Shamrocks’ tied the game in the bottom of the inning with four straight singles. Mahan led off with a hit, then Collin Lindsey moved him to second. Trey Dorton batted in Mahan, then Evan Russ scored Lindsey.
Both teams added a run in the fourth inning. Niswonger scored for the Millers on an error, then Westfield tied it up again when Clarke got home on Lindsey’s RBI fielder’s choice.
Noblesville took the lead for good in the sixth inning. Nolan Decker’s RBI fielder’s choice sent Wilson home, then Jacob Edwards scored on an error. Kern completed the Millers’ scoring by getting home on an error in the seventh inning. Russ scored for Westfield in the bottom of the seventh on an error.
Edwards was 3-for-4 at the plate for Noblesville; both he and Riggs hit a double. Kern threw two and two-thirds innings for the win, both he and starter Lucas Stephan struck out five batters each.
Clarke and Mahan both had three hits for Westfield.
The Millers are 8-7, while the Shamrocks are 9-4. The series concludes tonight in an 8 p.m. game at Victory Field.

Carmel won an all-county game with 3A No. 10 Guerin Catholic on Thursday, 9-0 at Hartman Field.
The Greyhounds started with three runs in the second inning. Case Sullivan scored the first run when Tim Haas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Nathan MacLaren singled in Dan Cunningham, then Adam Buczkowski scored on Hunter Snow’s RBI groundout.
Griffin Wolf scored in the fourth inning when JD Stein hit a sacrifice fly. MacLaren got a fifth-inning run when Snow singled him in. Carmel then put up four runs in the fifth inning: Haas hit a two-RBI single to score Cunningham and Stein, Snow doubled in Nathan Williams, then Snow stole home plate.
MacLaren finished the game with three hits, while Snow had three RBIs. Cam Heaney pitched six innings for the win, striking out six.
Clay Patton, Sam Tabor and Adam Novelen each had one hit for the Golden Eagles; Novelen’s hit was a double.
Carmel is 7-3 and plays a doubleheader Saturday morning at Ben Davis. Guerin Catholic is 10-4 and hosts Warren Central Saturday morning.

University, ranked No. 3 in 2A, beat Greenwood Christian Academy 4-0 in a Pioneer Conference game Thursday at RoundTripper Academy.
The Trailblazers started with a run in the first inning. Jake Hooker led off with a double, then scored when Thomas Price singled him in. University added three runs in the third inning with just one swing: Brady Redman smacked a double to score Price, Zane Kampmeier and Seth Hogg.
Price finished the game with two hits. Redman got the pitching win, both he and Price threw five strikeouts.
The ‘Blazers are 12-2 and play at the Wabash tournament on Saturday.
