Blind Indiana Veteran Lonnie Bedwell aims for the North Pole, attempting historic Explorer’s Grand Slam

Indiana native and blind U.S. Navy veteran Lonnie Bedwell is preparing for the adventure of a lifetime, a grueling ski expedition to the Geographic North Pole that could place both him and his home state of Indiana in the history books.

Bedwell is attempting to complete the Explorer’s Grand Slam, one of the most elite achievements in the world of exploration. The feat requires climbers to summit the highest peak on each of the seven continents, known as the Seven Summits, and reach both the North and South Poles.

Only 73 people worldwide have ever completed the Explorer’s Grand Slam. If successful, Bedwell will become the first blind person and the first Hoosier to achieve the distinction.

The North Pole expedition is the final milestone in a decade-long journey that began with Bedwell’s quest to summit the Seven Summits. In October 2025, he reached the top of Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia, completing that portion of the challenge and leaving the Arctic as the final frontier.

To mark the significance of the moment, Bedwell will carry an official Indiana state flag provided by Governor Mike Braun to the top of the world, a symbolic tribute to the Hoosier community that has supported him throughout his journey.

Bedwell’s story began in the small town of Dugger, Ind., where the values of resilience, service, and determination shaped his life. After losing his sight, he refused to allow blindness to define his future. Instead, he built a reputation as one of the world’s most accomplished blind adventurers.

Bedwell became the first blind kayaker to paddle the entire Grand Canyon and was named National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2015. Today, he continues to push boundaries while inspiring veterans, people with disabilities, and students across the country through his speaking and advocacy. His mission is simple: prove that limitations do not determine what a person can achieve.

“Vision,” Bedwell said, “is nothing more than a dream unless you do something to turn it into reality.”

Bedwell’s pursuit of the Explorers Grand Slam has been more than a personal journey, it has become the focus of a feature-length documentary currently in production.

Common Ground Films, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to mission-driven storytelling, is producing the film in collaboration with Blueline Pictures, an Indiana-based production company. The documentary will chronicle Bedwell’s decade-long journey and his final push to the North Pole. The film is currently in production and expected to be completed in 2027.
